Huon Valley, Tasmania (Wk 10)

We’ve arrived! Unbelievably there is some smoke but it still feels fresh and looks green after NSW and VIC. We are both relieved and excited to be visiting Tasmania.

We had a great crossing of the Bass Strait (with the help of some kwells for Alison 🙂 ) and disembarked at Devonport 20 minutes after docking. We drove south, arriving at our campsite before midday.

Our first stay in Tasmania is the Huon Valley which is south west of Hobart. The campsite is on the banks of the Huon River at Huonville, good for swimming and platypus spotting. They also have a rescue centre for Tasmanian Devils which is open to campers each afternoon. Lovely spot. Feeling very relaxed.

Yesterday we drove to Kettering and took a ferry to Bruny Island. We spent the day driving around the island and managed to include a bush walk (the view wasn’t as published but we needed the exercise!) and a 4WD. Bruny Island’s roads are mainly dirt. The highlight was The Neck Lookout.

The Neck Lookout – The road has a penguin crossing area
Bruny Island Bush Walk (lovely and steep walk but view at top was obscured!)
