Derwent Bridge and Lake St. Clair (Wk 14)

The Wall

On 10/02/2020 we travelled on winding roads uphill out of Queenstown towards Derwent Bridge for a one night pub stay (hooray, no cooking or washing up! And the best curry we’ve had in Australia).

Once we arrived we visited The Wall. A work in progress, The Wall is being carved from three-metre high wooden panels. The carved panels will tell the history of the harsh Central Highlands region – beginning with the indigenous people, then to the pioneering timber harvesters, pastoralists, miners and Hydro workers. When completed The Wall will be 100 metres long. The work and the scale is amazing. Hard to explain. No photos are allowed.

In the afternoon we went for a walk around Lake St. Clair which is at the southern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and whose claim to fame is being Australia’s deepest lake (160+ mtr).

The following morning we began our journey to Devonport with a one night stay in Deloraine (a lovely country town) and then onto Forth where we are free camping until tomorrow evening when we catch the ferry to Melbourne.

A little afternoon refreshments!
