Ormiston Gorge, West MacDonnell Ranges (WK 3)

Ormiston Gorge

We travelled briefly through the West MacDonnell Ranges in October 2015 with our good friends Trish and Pete who were visiting from the UK. The countryside was so amazing we decided to put it on the Big Lap route. We have not been disappointed.

We arrived at Ormiston Gorge campground on 08/04/2021 for 3 nights to walk and swim in Ormiston and the surrounding area.

As we were unable to book Ormiston Gorge camping, Paul and Jason went to the campground to get 2 camping spots whilst Jo and I went shopping in Alice Springs. Not going to say too much about Alice except to say that neither the Tedders nor the Farrows will be moving there anytime soon….

Ormiston is a little gem with basic facilities right in the gorge. We changed into swimmers and went straight to the waterhole followed by an ice-cream at the kiosk. A perfect end to a day driving; all tar but still with single track parts where we had to stop to allow a road train to pass 😊.

On 09/04/2021 we went for a walk along Ellery Creek followed by a swim in the Big Hole which lived up to its name. The best gorge and best swim so far on the trip.

On 10/04/2021 we went for a circular walk along both sides of Ormiston Gorge which involved going up, going down, scrabbling over rocks, and being helped down from a ledge (by Jason and a stranger 😊) to avoid walking in the waterhole.

On 11/04/2021 we head off to Kings Canyon for 2 nights staying at Kings Creek Station for more walking and swimming.

Fabulous photos – I thought Ellery Creek was the prettiest gorge but loved them all. D
