We always knew that travelling along Highway1 on the east coast was going to be horrid and it lived up to our expectations (and some). The number of roadworks, changing speed limits and the bad road surface was truly unpleasant. Luckily we broke the journey up into 5hr max trips.
On 13/09/2021 we left Palm Cove and drove to a free camp in Rollingstone. The drive around Cairns was busy followed by lots of roadworks. Luckily our destination was the best free camp we’ve stayed in with water taps, toilets and rubbish bins as well as being in a quiet location off the Highway.

On 14/09/2021 we drove to “Oh Deere” cane farm stay in Calen. The road hugged the coast to allow views of Hinchinbrook Island. However, the number of roadworks took its toll with the speed limit varying from 100 to 80 to 60 to 80 to 100 to 80 with many single track traffic lights to add to the fun. Luckily again our overnight stay was in a beautiful quiet location in the middle of cane fields (need to watch out for snakes ….. a metal garden ornament spooked Paul 🤣). The owners have a communal fire for happy hour which was needed as it was surprisingly cold once the sun went down.

On 15/09/2021 we drove to a pub stay ($5 per person to use toilet/shower) in Marlborough. Even though there were less roadworks the road deteriorated drastically (and the speed limit increased to 110, go figure) and less overtaking lanes. Very frustrating drive with slow traffic including an army convoy at 90kph. I also had my first ever RBT (0.00). Typical country pub which was just what was required.

On 16/09/2022 we drove the short distance into Yeppoon for a 2 week stay waiting out our return to Brisbane.

What’s a RBT? Road breath test? It’s been ages since we caught up shall we try and Skype this week? Text me?
Random Breath Test – we can be stopped anytime in Australia.
